How to Choose the Right Size: Pendants, Chandeliers & Ceiling Lights
EyeRelief Studio
A beautiful light in the wrong size never looks right. Too small and it disappears; too large and it overwhelms the room. The good news: designers rely on a few simple rules you can apply in minutes, with nothing more than a tape measure.
1. The diameter rule for ceiling lights
Measure the length and the width of your room in feet and add them together. The result, in inches, is a good diameter for a central ceiling light or chandelier.
- A 12 × 14 ft bedroom → 12 + 14 = 26 in → a fixture around 24–26 in wide.
- A 10 × 10 ft hallway or office → 20 in, or two smaller flush mounts instead of one.
For corridors and entries, think in rhythm rather than size: compact flush mounts such as Mubo™ or Shiyue™ repeated every 8–10 ft feel calmer than one large fixture.
2. Over a dining table
A pendant or chandelier over a table should measure about half to two-thirds of the table's width, and leave at least 6 in of table on each side.
- Round table 48 in → pendant 24–32 in.
- Long rectangular table → a linear pendant about two-thirds of the table length, such as Mulin™, or two to three smaller pendants in a row.
Hanging height: the bottom of the fixture should sit 28–34 in above the tabletop (add about 3 in for every foot of ceiling above 8 ft). Low enough to feel intimate, high enough to see the person opposite you.
3. Over a kitchen island
Use two pendants for islands up to about 6 ft, three for longer ones. Leave roughly 30 in between pendants and at least 6 in from each end of the island. Hang them 30–36 in above the countertop.
4. Bedside pendants instead of lamps
Hanging a small pendant on each side of the bed frees the nightstand and looks instantly tailored. Hang it so the bottom sits about 20–24 in above the nightstand, slightly in front of your shoulder line. Small sculptural shades like Shibing™ are made for this.
5. Wall sconces: height and spacing
- Living room & hallway: centre the sconce at about 60–66 in from the floor (roughly eye level).
- Bedside: 48–60 in from the floor, about 6–10 in outside the edge of the headboard.
- Bathroom mirror: one on each side at eye level, 30–40 in apart, for shadow-free light on the face.
- Hallways: one sconce every 8–10 ft.
6. Ceiling height matters
Under 8 ft, choose flush mounts and keep pendants over tables only. From 9 ft and above, chandeliers and longer drops start to make sense — allow at least 7 ft of clearance under any fixture in a walkway.
EyeRelief tip — When in doubt between two sizes, cut a circle of cardboard at each diameter and tape it to the ceiling. Your eye will choose in seconds.
